My non-binding, personal favourite games of 2022

    Form up!

    1. Nobody Saves The World

An action RPG dungeon crawler, with a focus on form switching and ability unlocks. The game really kicks into gear when you earn the ability to combine abilities from other forms into any existing form, giving you the power to remix your character at will.

Game Pass 2022: By The Numbers

High on Life, Day One in Game Pass in 2022

This year I started manually tracking Game Pass drops. The list is in a publicly accessible Notion database, that any user can sort or filter to their heart’s desire.

A New Dawn – A Sea of Thieves Cinematic

Hustle and bustle in Golden Sands.

While the world of Sea of Thieves has always been a living, changing experience – this is the first time we’ve seen such a meaningful and significant change to the existing landscape.

How to get more responsive screenshots on Xbox

    Quick as lightning.

It’s not a huge deal, but yes: the Xbox capture button is laggy.

The new Xbox controller that released along side the Series X and S in 2020 has a dedicated Share button. While it’s a nice addition, and the system settings allow you to customise its behaviour, I have noticed that it’s ever so slightly… delayed when taking a screenshot.

The PS5 External Disc Drive is Alive

In September Tom Henderson broke the news that Sony have been testing an external disc drive for their PS5 console. Today he confirmed the device is in testing and “works flawlessly”.

The design of the PS5 is fucking weird.

    Pope Hat

It baffles me that generally people have come to accept and even prefer the design of this thing. It’s obviously a very capable console, but the industrial design of the device is all over the place.

    Consoles and Competition

Ben Thompson goes on a 40 year deep dive of the video game industry then calls into question some of the FTC’s specific concerns with Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Microsoft is willing to cannibalize itself to build a new business model for video games, and it’s a business model that is pretty darn attractive for consumers. It’s also a business model that Activision wouldn’t pursue on its own, because it has its own profits to protect. Most importantly, though, it’s a business model that is anathema to Sony: making titles broadly available to consumers on a subscription basis is the exact opposite of the company’s exclusive strategy, which is all about locking consumers into Sony’s platform.

Here’s the thing: isn’t this a textbook example of competition? The FTC is seeking to preserve a model of competition that was last relevant in the PS2/Xbox generation, but that plane of competition has long since disappeared. The console market as it is today is one that is increasingly boring for consumers, precisely because Sony has won. What is compelling about Microsoft’s approach is that they are making a bet that offering consumers a better deal is the best way to break up Sony’s dominance, and this is somehow a bad thing?

    Jedi: Survivor – Reveal Trailer

    BD-1 and his sidekick.

EA/Respawn’s Jedi become a series with Jedi: Survivor due to arrive March 17th, 2023.

I finished a replay of Fallen Order last week, and while it’s very enjoyable – and let’s face it, a great Star Wars game – it has a decided “last gen” feel, even with patches for the current gen machines.

    Now playing: Eastward

    Fried chicken!

A few hours into Eastward on Game Pass. It’s a little odd but very charming. And the pixel art is incredible. The gameplay elements are fairly mild and maybe not quite engaging ‘enough’, but the charm absolutely carries it.
